The US has been hit by some tough times, faced by even tougher tragedies lately, the most recent being the storms that have hurt so many.

Here in AZ it is definitely summer. Hot temps, cool pools and tons of fun in the sun! Which means it’s time to shop for sunscreen.
The Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) newly released 2011 sunscreen guide can help you make smart decisions.
I was shocked to read that this research and advocacy group recommends a mere 20 percent of the 600-plus beach and sport sunscreens it evaluated. “To score high marks in the rankings, a product must be effective — adequately protect skin from both UVA (which causes premature aging, skin cancer, and other skin damage) and UVB (which causes sunburn) rays. It must also be safe, meaning free of potentially harmful chemicals.”
In this Fab-house we use sunscreen or products with SPF in them year round. And I was surprised to find out that not all of them are safe or effective!

Recently, my little boy-o-saurus turned ROAR(four!). He loves him some dinosaurs, so we decided to have a dinosaur themed birthday party. I had so much fun with this theme and it was so easy and inexpensive to carry out I just HAD to share!
My favorite part was the little dino-topped cupcakes. I searched the web high and low for ideas on cakes and was originally going to make this cake, but after seeing these little dinosaurs at the Dollar Tree(in packs of 8 for $1), I decided that the cupcakes would be so stinkin’ cute and half the work!
About 2 months before the Jurassic day, I started scouring yard sales and thrift stores for dinosaur figures and I think my cake stand dino-terrarium displayed them perfectly! I only wish I’d thought to put some peet moss or something under them, but it was a spur of the moment decor idea
I hung green streamers on the walls(those were 2 for $.80) to mimic vines and hung palm tree cut-outs(found at Party City for $.99) to give the room a jungle-vibe.
The kids all got a dinosaur “tattoo” when they walked in the door and they took home goody bags filled with more tattoos, dinosaur eggs, more miniature dinosaurs, candy and dinosaur stickers. Each bag cost less than $2 to put together and was still dinoasaur themed! The trick is to find packs of things like the stickers/tattoos & candy and take the time to divy them up between the bags.
On the menu we had:
- Dinoburgers and Dinodogs
- An Herbavore Platter
- Dinosaur Bones(large broken up pretzels)
- Liquid Lava(juice)
We had two dino-themed parties, one for family(we have ALOT of family!) and a playdate style party for his playgroup buddies. For the playgroup I designed an evite that you can personalize with a photo, found a photo off the internet(right click on a picture you like and select “save picture as…), then uploaded the photo to creat an e-vite that looked like this:
Then when you get to the “invite options” part, select “write your own” for the guest replies. I thought this was uber-clever of me(if I say so myself!):
Are You In The Herd?
- Yabba-Dabba-Do!!
- I “Dino”(maybe)
- Extinct
That’s it! We had a dino-mite party, with out breaking the bank-osaurus!
Feel free to borrow a little Jurassic inspiration from your 2Fab Host-avores.
Women do not have to sacrifice personhood if they are mothers. They do not have to sacrifice motherhood in order to be persons. Liberation was meant to expand women’s opportunities, not to limit them. The self-esteem that has been found in new pursuits can also be found in mothering. -Elaine Heffner

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 8th.
Psst….listen up Fabooshies, cuz I’m about to let you in on a little secret…..ALL mom’s want to feel celebrated on Mother’s Day.
Regardless if the mom in your life is a martyr mom “being a mother is the greatest gift”, a frugal mama “save your money for something special” or a humblepie mommy “whatever you want to do”, ALL MOM’S WANT TO FEEL CELEBRATED ON MOTHER’S DAY.
That doesn’t mean that you have to spend a lot of money, just put some thought into it. Whether it’s a homemade card or craft, a corsage and brunch, taking her to see a play or exhibit, or planning a fun afternoon together, just make it personal and the mommy-lady in your life will be glowing with love & pride!
Tiptastix:
- Think about what she likes (her fave color, flower, scent, food, etc).
- Re-create a fave childhood moment for her. (photo book or collage)
- Spend some time with her. (some moms just want to hang with you)
- And remember, if it weren’t for your that mommy-lady in your life, you wouldn’t be YOU.
- From the Craftonista: handmade cards, craft or create something (decorate a picture frame, build a birdfeeder, make a windchime), make a Power Point presentation “why I love you mom”
- From the HandyMan(dy): does mom need some help around the house (cleaning, fixing or replacing)?
- How about Take Out?: is there a movie or musical mom wants to see? a restaurant she likes or a new place she wanted to try?
- From the Shopaholic: take mom shopping! is there something she really wants but won’t buy for herself? (clothes, housewares, electronics, CD’s, etc) or treat mom to a spa day.
Just put some thought into it. Did I say that already? YES, I did, but with reason dear Fabooshies….Some moms may want a new set of pots & pans or vacuum for Mother’s Day but other moms may be insulted by that. (if you aren’t sure how she would react, avoid household gifts altogether). But most importantly, mama mia’s just want to feel celebrated and appreciated. (not so much to ask once a year, eh?)
